The crunch and tang of this Crispy Orange Tofu with a Cashew Avocado Sauce will make take out a thing of the past for you. It’s the perfect combination of comfort food with fresh ingredients that’ll leave you satisfied and wanting it over and over and over again.
I used to love the classic Asian dishes you can get like Orange Chicken, General Tso, Sesame…If it had a bite to it and was smothered in sauce, I’d eat it. Since exploring more plant based eating habits, it’s been hard to find these things at a restaurant that were light, crispy and vegan. So, of course, I made my own.

Inspired by the Crispy Sweet and Sour Tofu from Hot for Food, I got in the kitchen and started frying up delicious bits of tofu. As you know, frying makes everything better and tofu is no different. If you have someone in your life that you think should try tofu, just fry it up. They won’t be able to resist.
Also, this was my first-time deep frying something. Living in North Carolina, I’m sure I stick out like a sore thumb just for never frying something before. So does this make me a Southerner yet? Not sure but it’s definitely a step in that direction. As delicious as these glorious bits of fried tofu were, frying will be a luxury for now.
Speaking of the sauce, it’s from the Orange Chicken recipe I created last summer. The sauce can make or break a recipe and this one knocked it out of the park. Often when you have ‘Orange’ anything from an Asian restaurant, it tends to have less actual orange flavor and is overpowered by the sugar. But no, not this one! Full of a boat load of orange zest and freshly squeezed orange juice, the sauce is perfectly tangy. Combine with other classic flavors like garlic, ginger, soy sauce, etc. its a true winner. Toss it on anything and this sauce would still be delicious. You best believe this made it on left over rice and veggies later in the week.
As if a killer orange sauce wasn’t enough, this bowl of heaven is topped off with a Cashew Avocado Sauce that was creamy, light, refreshing and the perfect complement to the zestiness of the sauce. And with only 5 ingredients, talk about EASY! So whether you’re making this Crispy Orange Tofu (totally recommend), tacos, taquitos, any type of sandwich…pretty much anything, slap this on it and it’ll take you food to the next level.
Since life is about balance, the Crispy Orange Tofu and Cashew Avocado Sauce paired perfectly with fresh steamed veggies
As I’m typing this up, my stomach is growling for it all over again. #foodbloggerproblems. Time for leftovers! Hope you enjoy!
