About 4 months ago, my roommate came home with a coffee table that needed some TLC to say the least! We’re talking scratched, a missing center piece and a less than pretty brown color. Don’t believe me? See the evidence for yourself. It was an eye sore in our living space while serving as a jungle gym to her cats. After tossing around a few ideas with a special someone, we finally made it into something I enjoy looking at every day!
As a huge fan of pallet furniture and upcycling material that normally would just be burned or thrown out, that just seems like the right direction to go in. I had originally thought of using a bottle top collection that I’ve grown over the past 6 months but soon realized that I didn’t nearly have enough. And as much as I enjoy a good beer, the amount of drinking that would have needed to happen would have taken the rest of the year. Needless to say, I’m not that patient!
Anyways…I raided a wood shed for some pallet pieces that would work and gathered all the supplies I would need (plywood, sanders, saws, wood glue – you know, the basics) and got to it! I must say, I absolutely fell in love with the end result! I used a gray stain I had left over from making a bed, pallet wood and bought a piece of plywood to help keep the middle steady. The hardest part was making sure the measurements were correct for the center piece. Cutting the plywood to size first and them glueing the pallet wood on top made it easy to get the perfect fit and take out a little of the guessing game.
The best part? I still haven’t completely furnished my apartment so I get to build a whole room around this unique and gorgeous table. I read that people tend to enjoy things (furniture, food, gifts, etc.) a whole lot more when they are made themselves. After this project, I couldn’t agree more!
Time to start finishing the room and coming up with my next project!
